What Function Does an Air Conditioner Serve?

An air conditioner, or AC, is a machine that’s used to regulate the temperature in a building by sending cooled air throughout the structure. An AC system features both an indoor and an outdoor unit which is joined through refrigerant lines. The refrigerant is contained by pump tubes, unlike water cooling where it uses pumps, water flows freely from one pump to another. The oil in an AC system prevents rusting and other forms of corrosion while also being a lubricant for the compressor. It also makes sure that there’s a constant supply of coolant going into the evaporator coils by regulating how much will be flowing around the compressor and condenser.

How Does an Air Conditioner Work

An air conditioner works by blowing out a stream of cool air which is a matter of transferring heat from one place to another. When the refrigerant goes through the coil, it absorbs heat from the room. As this happens, it converts into a hot gas which then heats an expansion valve that allows the gas into a smaller area. This process results in a pressure drop which lowers its temperature and facilitates the condensation of molecules. Once these molecules have hit sufficiently low temperatures, they become liquid and start flowing through evaporator coils where the cooling takes place.

What Modes Does an Air Conditioner Have?

A central AC unit has five different modes: Cool Only: A fan blows in cool air and circulates throughout the room

  • Heat & Cool: A fan blows in cool air and circulates throughout the room. If it’s cold outside, the heat pump will run to create warmth
  • Fan Only: The fan runs without the AC compressor turning on
  • AC with Heat Pump: The AC compressor turns on and off to circulate air while the heat pump runs to create warmth if it’s cold outside
  • Emergency Heat: In case of a power failure, this mode will use the furnace to generate heat

How To Make Sure Your Air Conditioner Works

If you’re having trouble with an air conditioner you should find an AC repair company to fix or replace many different things about your AC that could be causing the problem. It might not be working at all, it could just need to be cleaned out, or the circuit breaker might have tripped.

To ensure that your air conditioner is working properly, there are several steps you can take. If your AC isn’t blowing cold air anymore, check if the fan is running and whether or not there’s any ice building up around the coils. If it doesn’t seem like any of this is happening, unplug the device for a few minutes before plugging it back in again. After doing so, check to see if it’s starting to cool the room. If it still doesn’t seem like it’s working, try checking to make sure that all of the wires are plugged in and if your circuit breaker hasn’t tripped.

Selecting The Best Mode For Your Air Conditioner

If you’re wondering what mode to set your air conditioner on, there are several things that you should take into consideration:

  • Attic/Crawlspace: Leave the heat off and turn on your fan for maximum efficiency
  • Basement: Keep the heat off and leave your fan running at a low setting so that the moisture from sweat from work clothes isn’t being trapped inside
  • Home Office: Set your AC on Cool Only or Heat & Cool so that everyone can be comfortable without wasting energy on heating
  • Kitchen: Leave the heat off and turn on your fan for maximum efficiency
  • Living Room/Bedroom: Set your AC on Heat & Cool so that everyone can be comfortable without wasting energy on cooling or set it to Cool Only if you want a room that’s even cooler than normal
  • Recreation Room: Turn the heat off and keep the fan running at a low setting to prevent sweat from building up inside of this space
  • Upstairs: Make sure the heat pump is turned off during the summer months, leave the fan running at a low setting, and set your AC to Fan Only or Heat & Cool if you want to cool down this area quickly. Remember that an air conditioner works best when it’s being used in a cool area, to begin with.
