New Year, New HVAC System

If it feels like there are always new products for heating and cooling hitting the market, year after year, you’re not wrong; however, deciding which HVAC system is right for you does not have to be an overwhelming process.

With us, here at Weathermakers Air Conditioning & Heating, you will understand the differences between a traditional air conditioning system, a ductless mini-split system, and a heat pump.

Here’s your 2020 HVAC guide.

Home Air Conditioning & Heating Options

Central HVAC System

When someone says, “traditional heating and cooling system”—they are talking about a central HVAC system. A traditional HVAC network pumps heated or cooled air through a duct system that is either built-in to your floors or your ceiling. The adjusted air is then released into your home through air vents.

Central heating and cooling systems are most popular in newer homes, as installing a central HVAC system is an extremely involved process.

Construction is required to build-out ductwork, so this is a great choice if you are planning a remodel or building new construction.

Ductless System

As an alternative to a traditional system, ductless mini-splits can provide the same heating or cooling effect without the hassle of installing a network of ducts. One hole will need to be drilled through an exterior wall, to allow a pipe to run from your outdoor compressor to your indoor delivery unit.

If you don’t mind mounting a system on your wall, ductless mini-splits are actually the most versatile and most energy-efficient heating and cooling appliance you can get. Each indoor unit (you can install multiple) has its own thermostat, giving you the ability to heat or cool your rooms separately.

As for energy-efficiency, ductless systems eliminate the potential for air leaks and duct loss, as your heated or cooled air doesn’t have to travel as far before entering your home.

When should you install a ductless mini-split system in your home?

  1. If you have an unfinished basement, attic, or garage you want heated or cooled

  2. If you only have one room in your home that needs individual heating or cooling

  3. If you live in an older home without previously installed ductwork

Heat Pump

This is the hybrid of all heating and cooling systems. Heat pumps can run year-round, making them a great investment. How does this system heat and cool your air? With an electrical system that shifts air from outside to inside, and vice versa.

A heat pump can both extract heat and absorb heat, then pushing that controlled air into a new space. This system is great for your home if your goal is energy-efficient and cost-effective climate control.
